The Cost Of Large-screen OLED Manufacturing In The High-end Market Is Expected To Decrease By 35%

- Oct 17, 2018-

Currently in the high-end TV market, the development is towards 65 inches or above, but the manufacturing cost of the 65-inch OLED TV panel is 90 percent higher than that of the 55-inch LCD panel. The main reason for the higher cost is the low efficiency of glass.Manufacturing in a 10 - generation plant will reduce manufacturing costs by 35%.According to Jimmy Kim, senior principal analyst of panel materials and components at IHS Display, the cost of making OLED TV panels has fallen each year since LG introduced its first 55-inch OLED TV.

Still, the cost gap between the 55-inch UHD and OLED TV panels is estimated to be as high as 100 to 200 per cent. The cost gap is expected to narrow further in the near future as OLED still has room to improve and LCD panel production technology is nearly mature.

Jimmy Kim pointed out that OLED TV manufacturing requires more production above the eight-generation line, and the estimated manufacturing cost of the 65-inch UHD OLED TV panel at the eight-generation line will be $1,300.
