Smartphones and automotive electronics have contributed to steady growth in global PCB production
Since the birth of PCB in 1936, it has been more than 80 years. If divided by the growth of output value, the industry has experienced four stages of development:
Rapid start period (1980-1990) : the global PCB market expands rapidly with an annual growth rate of 12.7%, while PCB technology develops from single layer to double layer and multi-layer.
Sustained growth period (1991-2001) : new technologies, such as HDI and FPC, promote the continuous growth of the global PCB market scale.
In a decade, global PCB output grew by more than 124 per cent.
Fluctuating growth period (2001-2010) : this stage is affected by IT bubble and financial crisis, and the industry shows fluctuating growth.
The IT bubble in 2000 led to excess capacity of PCB, resulting in negative global output growth in 2001 and 2002.
In 2008, the global financial crisis led to a drop in demand, resulting in negative global output growth in 2009.
Stable growth period (from 2011 to now) : since 2011, the development of the electronics industry has been relatively stable, and the new demand of downstream industries such as consumer electronics, automotive electronics and medical devices has been increasing continuously. The global PCB market has been growing steadily.
The new growth point of the industry comes from the development of downstream applications.
In all PCB applications, communications, automobiles, consumer electronics and aerospace account for a large proportion, among which communication is the largest consumer market, accounting for 34% and 35% of the downstream PCB applications in the world and mainland China respectively in 2016.
Although communication is the largest application market of PCB, its growth will be weak in the next few years. The global PCB industry will be driven mainly by the development of smart phones and automobile industry.
According to the data presented by Prismark in November 2017, the global output value of smartphone PCB and automobile PCB increased by 5% to 8% in 2016-2021, far higher than the output value growth of PCB in other fields.
In the field of smart phones, PCB is used in many parts such as lens, microphone, motherboard and I/O.
In the future, new functions and emerging markets will contribute to the growth of the PCB market.
In the automotive field, PCB is mainly used in automotive navigation system, headlight system, audio and video entertainment system and charging system.
Due to the different system and function requirements, different models have different value.
At present, the value of low -, medium - and high-end car PCB is $30- $40, $50- $70 and $100- $150 respectively.
In the future, the value of the average PCB per car is expected to grow to $75 from $62 in 2016 as vehicle electrification, automation and vehicle shipments increase.
Driven by the downstream application, the global PCB output scale will grow steadily.
According to Prismark's prediction data, the global PCB output value in 2016-2021 was 2.2% and will exceed $60 billion by 2021.
At present, North America's PCB BB value is in an upward trend.
